Sobacken - the Biogas Plant in Borås, Sweden Sobacken, the municipal waste management plant in Borås, treats household waste, industrial residues and sorted waste from recycling stations. The waste is classified into different fractions at Sobacken; waste for recycling, waste for biogas production, waste for combustion and hazardous waste. At the biogas plant the biowaste is treated. The biowaste consists of source-separated household waste and organic industrial waste both in solid and fluid form. The solid waste is disintegrated and diluted followed by separation of non-degradable parts in a Bioseparator, where a slurry is formed. The substrate is hygienised, digested and the organic content is converted into biogas. The biogas produced is then upgraded to pure methane and used as fuel for waste collection trucks, city busses and public vehicles. The residual product from the digestion is dewatered and after composting usable as fertilizer. The process water is treated for nitrogen removal and then reused in the process. The overflow is led to the municipal WWTP. The biogas plant is designed and built by Purac. Installations from a former plant have been used and integrated in the new plant.
